L-theanine is the reason a FEINE pouch is not simply a caffeine pill in a different wrapper. It is also the ingredient people are most likely to dismiss as filler, so it is worth looking at what the actual trials found.
What L-theanine is
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea leaves. It is not a stimulant. On its own it is generally associated with a calm, alert state rather than sedation or arousal. The interesting findings are almost all about what happens when it is paired with caffeine.
The core finding: accuracy, not just speed
The most cited work here is Owen and colleagues (2008), which tested 100mg caffeine with 200mg L-theanine against caffeine alone and placebo. The combination improved speed and accuracy on demanding cognitive tasks and reduced susceptibility to distraction, with effects that went beyond caffeine on its own.
Related work by Haskell and colleagues found that even modest amounts, around 97mg L-theanine with 40mg caffeine, improved attention switching accuracy and reduced self-reported tiredness.
The pattern across this literature is consistent and specific: caffeine alone reliably raises alertness and speed. Adding L-theanine tends to improve accuracy and the ability to hold focus on the right thing while ignoring the wrong thing.
Why that distinction matters at work
Being fast and being accurate are different problems. Caffeine alone can make you quicker and more wired without making your decisions better. In tasks where the cost of an error is real, measuring a cut, reacting to traffic, catching something on a line, the accuracy side is arguably the more valuable half.
Attention under pressure and sleep deprivation
More recent controlled work has tested the combination in acutely sleep-deprived adults, using 200mg L-theanine with 160mg caffeine. Researchers reported improvements in hit rate and in the ability to distinguish targets from distractors, alongside changes in P3b event-related potentials, an EEG measure associated with how quickly and fully the brain allocates attentional resources.
That is a meaningful context, because sleep-deprived is the actual state of most people reaching for caffeine.
Does it stop the jitters?
This is where honesty matters. Several trials report that L-theanine attenuates some of caffeine's less pleasant effects, including subjective jitteriness and caffeine-associated increases in blood pressure. But L-theanine does not neutralize a large caffeine dose. If 200mg of caffeine is too much for you, adding L-theanine does not make it appropriate. It smooths an edge; it does not remove a ceiling.
Ratios, and where FEINE sits
Much of the literature uses a roughly 2:1 ratio of L-theanine to caffeine, often 200mg to 100mg. Many products, FEINE included, work at higher caffeine doses than the classic study protocols, which means the ratio differs from the trials. That is a real difference and worth stating rather than glossing over.
The honest limitation
Every study referenced here tested isolated ingredients at specific doses in a lab, not the FEINE pouch. Dose, ratio and delivery method all differ from any single published protocol. The ingredients are well studied. The finished product has not been through its own trial.
